I have been earning a living teaching since the 2003-2004 school year with one short break in 2017-2018. I have taught high school English, first-year composition, and trained graduate student instructors to teach. I adore teaching for the following reasons (listed in no particular order):
- I love the intellectual work of teaching: figuring out how to merge theory and practice; sussing out what a student is thinking and explaining something in a way that allows them to make sense of it; teaching students to view their world critically.
- People are amazing and beautiful and wonderful. They all have stories and I want us to share our stories with each other, listening to and learning from them.
- In order for us to live in a just world, we must teach one another how to live in it, question it, and push against it. Teaching allows us to do that.
I have included here a little bit more about me and why I teach, as well as units that highlight my take on teaching.
In the drop down menu for this page you’ll find feature units from my teaching:
- Man’s Inhumanity to Man Unit (9th grade)
- Pop Culture Unit (11th grade)
- Public Arts Installation (12th grade)
- Repurposing Assignment (first-year composition)
- Teaching Teachers (work at the Center for Research on Teaching and Learning)
